Taxable Sales

The population and economic growth in the region are reflected in the net taxable sales. Net taxable sales climbed in all four counties from fiscal year 2013 to 2022, most notably in Beaufort and Jasper Counties. In Beaufort County, sales had continuously increased since 2013, except for 2020 when sales bottomed out presumably due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In Colleton and Hampton Counties, sales increases in a slow pace and fluctuated up and down.

Data Notes
Definition Sales Tax:  The tax that is imposed on the sale of goods and certain services in South Carolina. The statewide sales and use tax rate is six percent (6%). Counties may impose an additional one percent (1%) local sales tax if voters in that county approve the tax. Generally, all retail sales are subject to the sales tax.
