Healthy Food Environment

Food Environment Index reflects the share of food retailers that are considered healthy based on size and typical food offerings. Healthy retailers include supermarkets, produce markets and warehouse clubs, while less healthy retailers include fast-food restaurants and convenience stores. The index ranges from a scale of 0 (worst) to 10 (best) and equally weighs two indicators: limited access to healthy food and food insecurity. Higher scores indicate more healthy food than unhealthy food available in a community. The healthy food environment in the region has improved over time.
