Commuting to Work

Commuting patterns and proximity can influence a range of outcomes, from the fiscal health of a community to employment opportunities for residents. Differences across people and places in job proximity, and trends over time, illustrate economic and demographic shifts. Information on commuting patterns can also help to assess how economic opportunity is distributed within the major metro areas where most people live and work. As illustrated in the dashboard, the average travel time to work in all counties has increased slightly over time between 2013 and 2022. In 2022, commuters in Beaufort County had the shortest travel time to work at 22.8 minutes. While commuters in Hampton County had the longest travel time at 35.2 minutes. This travel time to work is explained by the dashboard showing the Lowcountry residents travelling to work outside of their home counties as far as greater than 50 miles.
